A new, "unexpected" generation of Jews made an appearance in Poland following the fall of the communist regime. Once home to the greatest Jewish community in the world and then site of one of the biggest tragedies in Jewish history, today Poland is experiencing what some have called a "renaissance of Jewish culture." Simultaneously, more and more Poles are discovering their Jewish roots and beginning to seek forms of Jewish affiliation. Can there be "authentic" Jewish life in Poland after fifty years of oppression? "Return of the Jew" offers the first in-depth study of the third post-Holocaust generation of Jews in Poland. It provides a revealing account of the experience of being or rather becoming Jewish vis-a-vis uniquely compelling circumstances.

AbstractObjectiveTo examine the "sense of threat" and "sense of challenge" among Holocaust survivors and second‐ and third‐generation cohorts during the first coronavirus lockdown in Israel.BackgroundAging, especially among people who experienced trauma during their early years, as did Holocaust survivors, can be challenging when unusual circumstances, such as the coronavirus pandemic, coincide with it. Studies are inconclusive regarding the effect of transgenerational transmission of trauma of survivors to their offspring.Methods129 participants filled out a questionnaire based on Lazarus and Folkman's cognitive theory of psychological stress and coping. Data were collected through online questionnaires or phone interviews.ResultsAll generations reported "feeling this is a difficult situation." Compared with the second generation, survivors reported a significantly higher "sense of threat" and significantly lower "sense of challenge."DiscussionThis study found that all generations felt some degree of vulnerability, although their response overall was resilient.ImplicationsAwareness of the harmful effects of stressful life events on the vulnerable Holocaust survivors and their descendants has prompted the need to establish support systems that can be activated to assist them. Future research should also investigate whether these reactions were prevalent among Holocaust survivors and their descendants in other countries.

This essay argues that some recent Holocaust films introduce a new attitude towards memory that moves beyond the notion of postmemory while remaining committed to the project of remembering the past and creating an ethical response. The films by Marceline Loridan-Ivens and Robert Thalheim focus on future generations and their ability to relate to the Holocaust in an ethical way that avoids the problems of traumatization and commodification that mark earlier Holocaust film and commercial cinema, respectively.

The psychological damage inflicted by the Nazi Holocaust continues to be felt more than a generation later. Therapists need to become more sensitive to the adverse effects this traumatic event has had on the children of survivors, effects that have too often been overlooked or denied.

However, the last fi ft een years have been characterized by two simultaneous phenomena: fi rst, the coming of age of a "third generation" with its own specifi c questions, which is willing to take over from the second generation and which has been extensively studied by psychoanalysts, and second, a complete renewal of the political context: the Holocaust, and the active role the French state played in it, are now considered inescapable parts of national political memory.
